American history buff? 5 reasons why Greeneville, TN, needs to be on your travel list

Do you completely geek out about history? Are you someone who remembers all the names and dates for every major skirmish ever fought? Do you absolutely dominate on trivia night? Mini Mall sees you—and we’re here to give you five reasons to add Greenville, Tennessee, to your must-see American history travel list (if it’s not there already). Let’s go!

  1. Downtown Greeneville Historic District
Greeneville is one of Tennessee’s oldest towns, and the Greeneville Historic District is at the heart of all that history. Established in 1783, the town’s past is well-preserved in the downtown core. Enjoy a self-guided walking tour and take in the distinctive architecture, unique character, and stunning natural backdrop of this important American locale.

  1. General Morgan Inn & Conference Center
While you’re in the area soaking up all the history, why not stay at the historical General Morgan Inn? First known as the DeWoody Tavern, the luxurious and elegant General Morgan Inn is one of the town’s most iconic buildings—and the site of some key events in the town’s making. It’s also the starting point of the 90-minute “A Walk with the President” tour, taking you on a guided journey towards a deeper understanding of the area’s history and heritage.

  1. Andrew Johnson National Historic Site
The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site gives you a glimpse into the early life and term of the 17th president of the United States. The site contains four noteworthy stops, including the Visitor’s Centre, Early Home, Homestead, and National Cemetery.

  1. Dickson-Williams Mansion
Both the Civil War Trail and the Walk with the President Tour make a point of passing by the Dickson-Williams Mansion, which was built by Greeneville’s first postmaster. After the Williams family, the historic home served as an inn that welcomed prestigious guests such as Frances Hodgsen Burnett, David Crockett, and James Polk, among many other important figures.

  1. Greeneville Greene County History Museum
Housing a nationally recognized collection of state and local history, the Greeneville Greene County History Museum is worth checking out. With 13 galleries and several walk-through exhibits, you’ll be transported back in time as you learn more about the area’s history.

If you’re up for a short drive, the Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park is right next door in the nearby town of Limestone, TN. The park is a lush expanse of natural beauty and features a replica of Davy Crockett’s childhood home. There is also a Visitor’s Center and Museum you can take in.
